"What the Hell is This?"
Trees are beautiful things. They are vulnerable little twigs when young. They grow to be majestic and impressing.
Trees fill our childhood with years of entertainment. We climb them, we hide behind them, we pick fascinating bugs off them, we read under them and we rest under their shade when it is just too warm to do anything else. We walk under them when the rain starts and then again when it ends too soon.
Trees stay in our lives forever. Even if we do not live in areas where there are many trees, the few we see remind us that not everything is flat, concrete, or cold. For city dwellers, trees are a welcome reminder that nature is still out there.
My high school began construction of a new science wing during my freshman year. This was a much needed wing and we all knew it. To our dismay, however, the school administration allowed trees over half a century old to be cut down. These trees were not in the area to be built upon; they were cut down because the construction crew needed a place to keep its machines when not in use.
I was walking to my morning classes one day when I saw the appalling sight of those grand trees, over three stories high and over half a century old, cut down, on the ground. The next day, they had been reduced to wood chips and splinters.
The Gravestones for Trees Campaign is for trees like these.
